By Pramod Madhav: A family of six was chased and attacked by a mob of villagers from Pudukottai in Tamil Nadu who claimed to have stolen from a temple. A 10-year-old girl from the family also died from the mob attack. A video of the mob attacking the family went viral on social media.

On Nov. 14, posts went viral on WhatsApp stating that a group was robbing roadside temples near Killanur village in Pudukottai district of TN. Seeing a group of six outsiders traveling in an autorickshaw, a gang of villagers began chasing the vehicle, claiming they were the robbers.

The gang surrounded the autorickshaw and stopped it near the Machuvadi area and started brutally attacking the relatives. Police officers arrived at the scene and rescued the family, who came from Cuddalore.

A video of them being attacked by the mob, with the deceased Karpagambika watching helplessly, has also gone viral. The family was taken to Pudukottai Government Hospital, where the child, who was seriously injured, died on Wednesday evening, November 16.

The child’s mother, Lilly Pushpa, has now filed a complaint with the Ganesh Nagar Police saying she, along with her family, had left Cuddalore in an auto rickshaw two months ago to visit a series of temples.

On November 14, three men had argued with her near Killanur. When her husband, Sathyanarayanasamy, intervened, they started attacking her. She also stated that the group started chasing them. Meanwhile, another video of the items allegedly stolen by the family has also gone viral, which was shot by villagers.

Further investigations are underway.
