By Dipaneeta Das: At least four workers from West Bengal were among eight killed in a collapse incident at a quarry in Mizoram. A total of 12 workers were trapped in the rubble when the quarry collapsed on them.

On Tuesday, the bodies of eight workers were recovered, with four more missing.

Of the eight, four are residents of Nadia and North 24 Parganas in West Bengal. The deceased were identified as Buddhadev Mondal (24), Mintu Mondal (22), Rakesh Biswas (20) and Madan Das (23).

Mintu, Buddhadev and Rakesh were residents of the Kalitala Para area of ​​Tehatta, Nadia, while Das was a resident of the Pipregachi area of ​​Chapra, North 24 Parganas.

The quartet left their homes earlier last week to work as contract workers for ABCI Infrastructures Pvt Ltd, local sources said.

“They were ambitious. Mintu wanted to buy a motorcycle and do something on his own without burdening his family. So he joined the construction company,” said Mintu’s father, Madhusudan Mondal, with tears streaming down his face.

“The boys went to Mizoram on October 8 to work under the contractor company. The contractor was working on the construction of the National Highway in Mizoram. They were among the 12 people who worked to transfer stones from the quarry during the construction of the highway,” Biswas’ neighbor told India Today.

As many as eight workers were killed and four others are still missing after a quarry collapsed on them in Mizoram on Monday evening. The bodies of the deceased were collected today. Many are still feared to be trapped under the rubble.

Rescue work began about four hours after the collapse, according to one of the workers. Initially, reports suggested that the victims were from Bihar. It later turned out that four of the eight were from Bengal.

Troopers from the Assam Rifles and Border Security Force (BSF) joined local police and people in the rescue operation. A team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), consisting of two officers and 13 personnel, has also arrived on the scene for rescue and relief operations.
