By Abdul Basheer: Eight students at a university in Hyderabad have been arrested for assaulting their hostel mate over allegedly offensive remarks against the Prophet Muhammad.

The victim student, identified as Himank Bansal, is an undergraduate law student at IFHE in Hyderabad. He was beaten up by his hostel mates on November 1. Video of the incident showed a group of students beating and beating Himank Bansal one after the other.

Ten days after the incident, Himant filed a complaint with the police on November 11 and a report was filed. Police have so far arrested eight students in connection with the case.

Police also detained nine members of the school board for negligence.

Speaking to India Today, Assistant Commissioner of Police Ravinder Reddy said: “The complaint has been received by mail and a case has been registered. In total, eight people have been arrested among the 10 suspects in the case.”

Ravinder Reddy said six suspects are freshmen and four are sophomores.

“The school board has informed the police that a total of 12 students have been suspended,” said ACP Ravinder Reddy, adding, “The board is also involved in the case as a defendant.”

What’s the case?

Himank Bansal, an undergraduate law student, was beaten by a group of people earlier this month.

Following the incident, Himank filed a police complaint on November 11 alleging that he had been physically and sexually harassed by 15-20 individuals in his hostel room on November 1.

“They pushed and abused him by punching him in the face, beating him, kicking him in the stomach, touching his genitals and forcing him to eat certain chemicals and powders,” the FIR said.

The complaint alleged that Reva, a third-year BBA student at IBS Hyderabad, even tried to put his genitals in his mouth.
Himank claimed that the suspect “tried to tear his clothes, make him naked and kept beating him one after the other with the slogan ‘beat him till he dies’.”

After Himank filed a complaint in the case, the police registered a case under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the sections of the Telangana Prohibition of Ragging Act.
