Adani Transmission Ltd (ATL), India’s largest private energy distribution company and the transmission arm of the diversified Adani Grouphas submitted its plans to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, focusing on the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), an international effort to contain global warming.

ATL has submitted its detailed plan and targets for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions within one year to SBTi, as part of its commitment to contribute to limiting global warming.

As part of its continued focus on sustainable growth and its net-zero journey, ATL committed to the SBTi in October 2021. ATL will act in accordance with much-needed climate action and devise a strategy to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

To meet these objectives associated with the SBTi commitment, ATL has deployed clear strategies. In a unique initiative in the country, ATL’s subsidiary AEML (Adani Electricity Mumbai Ltd) has introduced green tariffs, allowing AEML consumers to opt for green energy and receive a Green Power Certificate on a monthly basis. This initiative is popular with consumers who want to reduce their environmental footprint.

“We take seriously all initiatives aimed at contributing to India’s climate commitment through resolute climate action,” said Anil SardanMD & CEO, Adani Transmission Ltd. Submitting targets to the SBTi reaffirms our commitment to devising sustainable ways of doing business. It also strengthens India’s efforts to mitigate climate risks through individual and collective action. A culmination of several smaller actions such as energy efficiency initiatives at substations, disconnecting substations from the auxiliary power grid and connecting them to solar energy, and the introduction of efficient transmission lines aimed at reducing losses, combined with broader actions such as the introduction of green tariff at AEML, will contribute significantly to the achieving positive climate action.”

Signing up for the SBTi is an important step in India’s commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement. ATL became a signatory to the UN Energy Compact at the COP26 held in Glasgow in 2021. Through SBTi, companies set science-backed emissions reduction targets – across their entire value chain – consistent with keeping global warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. SBTi committed companies have 24 months to submit their objectives. After committing to SBTi in October 2021, ATL is one of the few companies to submit emissions reduction targets within a year.

SBTi is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRIA) and the Global Fund for Nature (WWF). It defines and promotes best practices in setting scientific objectives and independently assesses the objectives of companies.
