heirloom drama Shetland came to a dramatic end on Wednesday night, with the arrest of two main characters on suspicion of murdering each other. Jimmy Perez (Douglas Henshall) and Duncan Hunter (Mark Bonnar) were both falsely accused of murdering season four villain Donna Killick (Fiona Bell), who committed suicide before implicating both men in her death.
Over the season, Duncan, the biological father of Jimmy’s doting stepdaughter Cassie, had gradually become acquainted with Jimmy, and the two men had formed a strange friendship. Due to their shared connection, Duncan eventually admitted to helping Donna commit suicide at her request—but Donna had previously sent a letter to her attorney prior to her death, suggesting the two men planned to kill her.
After Duncan surrendered to the authorities to protect Jimmy, the police arrested Jimmy as well. Because it’s stuck on such a massive scale, audiences are already clamoring for answers, with one big worry: Shetland will be renewed for a seventh season.

Plot Summary for Shetland Season 7
As a result, you’re probably wondering what to expect from Season 7. When Shetland first premiered, it was basically a standard thriller drama with a bunch of detectives as the central characters. But over time, the writers have been able to make the deepening more engaging and complicated. Jimmy Pérez’s arrest at the end of last season was undoubtedly something viewers hadn’t counted on. It would be fascinating to see where the writers take the floor from here, now that the main character is imprisoned. Does it look like there will be another character who could be in his shoes? Was this all part of Donna’s plot to bring the Shetland detectives to justice? How is this gigantic mess cleaned up? All of these questions may have useful answers at their disposal.
The Story of Shetland Season 7
You are no doubt curious about what Season 7 has in store for you. When Shetland first premiered on television, it was just a conventional thriller show with a group of detectives as the main characters. The plot, on the other hand, has become more intriguing and complicated over time. Last season Jimmy Pérez was arrested, something the public did not expect. After the main character’s imprisonment, it will be fascinating to see where the writers get things from. Will there be a figure who can intervene in the future to fill his shoes? Was this all part of Donna’s plan to infiltrate the Shetland Police? What method will be used to clean up this huge mess? It is possible that all of these questions have plausible answers. Another important consideration to consider is the small size of the team. Duncan and Pérez are both currently in jail. Toscan had gotten pregnant, which was revealed at the end of Season 6. It remains to be seen how the authors will handle the remaining episodes of this season. There is widespread speculation that another member of the team will be introduced, or that the show’s direction will be changed.

Shetland Season 7 Trailer
Despite the fact that the production has indicated that the BBC is picking up another season, we can conclude that the recordings have only recently started. It will be a long time before the season starts to wind down. As a result, no trailer for season 7 has yet been released. Watch out during the first few months of 2022 as we may run into a trailer where more of the plot can be gleaned from the visuals. For now, we have very little idea of what will happen in Season 7. It’s all based on guesswork at this point.
Shetland series vs novel: which is better?
The fact that the series is based on Ann Cleeves’ novel of the same name may come as a surprise to some viewers. Despite the first series being mainly based on the novels, the latter have strayed quite a bit from the source material. Ann Cleeves, on the other hand, continues to exert a lot of influence throughout the show. However, if you’d rather read than watch television, you should definitely check out the collection of novels she has provided. “Raven Black” is the first novel in the series, followed by “White Nights”, “Red Bones”, “Blue Lighting”, “Dead Water”, “Thin Air”, “Offshore” (which is a short story), ‘Too good to be true’, ‘Cold Island’ and ‘Wild Fire’. Reading these novels will make you realize why the shows are so similar.
While these novels can be used to predict Season 7, doing so isn’t entirely feasible due to the team not strictly following the novel’s chronological order. It is correct to say that they simply take inspiration from the background and scenarios and turn them into action on the screen. It would be quite entertaining to find out which book was used as a reference point when the season premiered and we could see which book was used. If you want to continue enjoying Shetland, we recommend reading these parts to get the most out of the entire series.
