By India Today Web Desk: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated 3,024 EWS flats in Kalkaji, Delhi, built for slum dwellers as part of the Centre’s ‘in situ slum rehabilitation’ project. He handed over the keys to the flats to the beneficiaries at an event attended by Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena and Union Minister Harshdeep Singh Puri.
PM Modi handed over a total of 3,024 apartments to people of the economically weaker section. “This is a big day for the poor in Delhi. Those who lived in jhuggis (slums) are now getting a new life,” he said.
He said the 3,024 flats inaugurated on Wednesday were just part of the first phase. “Soon the other families who lived here in the slums will have their own flat. This rehabilitation project in the slums will make Delhi a model city,” Prime Minister Modi said.
Speaking at the congress, Prime Minister Modi said: “Our cities have not had a holistic development for decades. High and chic buildings can be seen on one side, while on the other side only slums are present. Holistic development cannot be achieved if such differences exist.”
