Microsoft will soon make Discord voice calling much better on Xbox by eliminating a major annoyance. In an upcoming update, you will no longer need to use a phone to connect to Discord voice chats, allowing Xbox owners to connect directly to calls on servers. This makes it a lot easier to just connect to Discord servers and start chatting with friends.
Xbox Insiders on the Alpha and Skip-Ahead Alpha rings can: start testing these changes todayand they allow you to browse all voice channels on all Discord servers you are in. To connect, you no longer need to continue the conversation using the Xbox or Discord mobile apps, and once your account is linked for the first time, you can join for free, right from your Xbox.
The only thing missing now is the ability to join Xbox’s Discord text channels. It’s not clear if Microsoft and Discord will ever add this functionality, but at least the voice experience will be greatly improved. The only reason you need your phone now is if you want to make a direct Discord call to a friend instead of chatting on a server. That still requires the mobile app to forward the call to your Xbox.
Like all Xbox dashboard updates, I expect this to roll out to all Xbox owners in the coming weeks.
