Tesla’s Fremont plant in California has been asked by Elon Musk to vote on United Auto Workers (UAW) unionization.
President Joe Biden addressed rival automakers Ford and General Motors in his State of the Union address, but not Tesla. Both companies have a large union presence, which is an important part of Biden’s electoral base.
The rejection of pro-union Biden may have been “because Tesla is not a union and has moved to Texas, a state with the right to work,” said Gene Simmons, Kiss bassist and vocalist.
Musk seems to agree, saying, “I would hereby welcome UAW to hold a union vote at their leisure.” Tesla is powerless to stop them.” Musk argues that because the Bay Area job market is so competitive, Tesla must “treat and compensate our (great) people,” making unionization unappealing.
While Musk has stated that he supports an honest vote on unionization, he and other Tesla executives have been accused in the past of obstructing union initiatives. A California judge found the company’s management guilty of a number of illegal activities against unions in September 2019.
Amita Tracy, the administrative judge, identified 12 activities of the company that violated U.S. labor laws. This includes allowing security officers to harass workers into handing out union flyers in the parking lot, prohibit employees from wearing union T-shirts and buttons, repeatedly question union organizers and eventually terminate one of them.
“Elon Musk says he is neutral on the union,” an employee told The Guardian in 2018. They have by no means been neutral. Anything pro-union or union will soon be shut down.” Musk has also been told to delete tweets that the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) viewed as a threat to union workers. The order is currently being appealed by Tesla.
The central question of the lawsuit is whether Holmes misled investors by making baseless claims about her wondrous Edison machine… which never came true as promised.
