After the New York Mets offered him a contract, he chose to follow football instead of baseball.

So Troy attended the University of Oklahoma and played football under head coach Barry Switzer. Since World War II, Troy quickly became the first freshman to start at quarterback. He later decided to join UCLA Bruins. However, due to college transfer rules, he had to sit out one year to lead the Bruins to a 20–4 record in two seasons. He earned the Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Year in his junior season. Later in 2008, Troy was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame.
Beginning of his career as a footballer
Troy was the first pick in the 1989 NFL Draft Dallas cowboys. However, the starting year wasn’t great after new owner Jerry Jones fired Tom Landry. But Troy won the quarterback job. On August 26, 1989, Troy played his first NFL preseason. He soon set an NFL rookie record. He later led the Cowboys to a 7-7 record, but was injured in the 15th game. He then also missed the last wild card spot in the playoffs. However, the 2000 season was Troy’s last season as a professional football player.
