HBO’s We Own This City, also considered by many to be the spiritual sequel to The Wire, concluded its first season just days ago. Created by George Pelecanos and David Simon, the show tells a fictionalized account of the infamous GTTF (Gun Trace Task Force) in the city of Baltimore.
The first season gave us a glimpse into the institutionalized corruption that is deeply rooted in the city. The series has been well received not only by critics, but also by the public. And everyone is now asking about We Own This City season 2. But will it ever happen? Let’s find out below-
Is We Own This City Season 2 coming back?
We Own This City debuted on the network on April 25, 2022 and ended on May 30, 2022. Meanwhile, things aren’t looking very bright with regard to Season 2 of We Own This City. As few fans may already know, the show was planned as a miniseries on HBO. In addition, series creator David Simon has previously stated that it is a “coda” for The Wire rather than a sequel.

Codas are generally used to add a piece to completed work and provide a final concluding chapter. Also, the fact that We, Own This City was planned as a miniseries makes a sequel less likely. However, there have been instances in the past where the miniseries has been extended due to the overwhelming response from fans. So everything depends on the reaction of the fans and the plans of the showrunners.
What could happen in We Own This City Season 2?
We Own This City’s potential as the conclusion to Simon’s The Wire story doesn’t mean it will. While the outcomes of the trials are portrayed, the protagonists almost always end up in prison. The whole purpose of We Own This City is to show that the so-called ‘war on drugs’ almost never ends because the organizations that support it are dishonest.

Ending the series by locking up the “bad people” goes against the theme of Simon’s show. This is because there is no large-scale systemic change as a result of a single high-profile drug seizure. More Baltimore stories that continue to explore misconduct and bureaucratic rot would be a great way to let the world grow naturally in We Own This City Season 2.
