The release date of Blumhouse’s upcoming horror film starring Ethan Hawke has been pushed back to summer 2022.
Movie theaters will now screen “The Black Phone,” originally scheduled for February 4 to June 24. A 13-year-old boy named Finney Shaw is kidnapped and carried to a soundproofed basement where no one can hear his screams by a murderer in ‘The Black Phone’, a Scott Derrickson film. For some reason, Finney begins to hear voices from previous killer’s victims when a disconnected wall phone starts ringing,” according to the film’s logline. Plus, they’re committed to preventing what happened to them from happening to Finney.”
A press release describes Hawke’s performance as “the most horrific role of his career,” as Mason Thames makes his feature film debut as Finney. Hawke plays the aforementioned killer in the film. It is written and directed by Derrickson, who previously worked on “Sinister” and Marvel’s “Doctor Strange.” Additionally, “The Black Phone” is produced by Jason Blum and C. Robert Cargill, as well as executive produced by Joe Hill, Christopher H. Warner, and Ryan Turek.
Pre-recorded footage of Hawke saying he was ignoring his “no evil guys” rule for the picture was shown at CinemaCon in August, while Blum claimed it was the scariest film he’d ever worked on.
“The teaser promises utter terror as the Thames is tortured by Hawke, who loves to don gruesome masks and tease him with memories of former basement dwellers and his own childhood,” Donnelly noted of the clip.
Over phone calls, ghosts of dead children try to help Thames escape by leaving clues and life hacks at his physical location. This introduces the supernatural into the story. Visions of his capture also haunt the Thames, and a little girl in the area tries to help the police track him down before it’s too late. †
