‘Honesty Shops’ launched for school students in Ernakulam. in Kerala
Schools in Ernakulam district of Kerala introduced ‘honesty shops’ for students up to grade 12. This initiative was launched by the student police cadet with the aim of cultivating valuable lessons about trust, truth and integrity for students.

Honesty shops were launched in schools in Ernakulam in Kerala.
By Shibimol KG: Schools in Ernakulam district of Kerala introduced ‘honesty shops’ for students up to grade 12. This initiative was launched by the student police cadet with the aim of cultivating valuable lessons about trust, truth and integrity for students.
There is no salesperson in these shops and there is no shopkeeper present. Students can choose items they need and drop the money for each item in the collection box onto a table. The price list of each item is displayed next to it.
The program has been launched in as many as 15 schools in Ernakulam district of Kerala. The shops are mainly open to students up to and including class 12.
Teachers have stated that students have been fair so far as the money matches the items purchased.
Cynthia Paulose, District Police Officer, Chowara, said: “I was initially curious how the students, especially the younger ones, approached this. I noticed they were calculating the amount for the items they were taking. We got really good responses from students. ”
The students were also asked to write stories and poems about honesty before the shops opened.
Student Police Cadet, an initiative launched in 2008 was started to instill more civic sense in students. The project also aims to shape them into responsible citizens who will respond positively to the demands of society.
