After Hyundai EVP and head of design SangYup Lee served a potential camping companion in the Ioniq 5 electric crossover, they pitched the recently unveiled Ioniq 6 as a “personal mobile studio” where you can not only work, but also relax and revitalize. . At a press conference this week, the car was described as “a cocoon-like personal space.” If you’re burned out in a home office, how about switching to a portable office, complete with 64 different interior colors to match your mood and can brighten up as you accelerate to keep you aware of your driving speed.
The carmaker is emphasizing remote work features, such as a “bridge-type” center console designed for a laptop and a note-taking application built into one of the two 12-inch screens. There are also four USB-C and USB-A ports to power various devices and slimmer car seats to maximize cabin space. Hyundai states that they are still very comfortable and are even designed to recline and sleep on.

And his “streamlinedShape isn’t just for aesthetics – the Ioniq 6’s 0.21 drag coefficient helps reduce power consumption to 14 kWh per 100 km, giving it an estimated 610 km or about 379 miles of range (although the estimate is based on the European WLTP range, expect the EPA range to be shorter). The Ioniq 6 in the press conference also had side-view cameras instead of traditional mirrors, which we probably won’t see in the US.

The Ioniq 6 sedan is aimed at young professionals who the company suggests want more technology, while the Ioniq 5 is more for young families who need the space and function of an SUV. While both vehicles are built on the automaker’s E-GMP electric vehicle platform, the Ioniq 6 includes 2WD/4WD automatic shifting, additional tuning features, and improved performance and efficiency through engine and drivetrain upgrades. Most importantly, the Ioniq 6 will be Hyundai’s first car to support over-the-air software updates.
Hyundai is also launching an Ioniq 6 NFT collection and says the car will be available to experience virtually at the automaker’s metaverse studio on Zepeto, along with a Roblox experience. And the Ioniq 6 online experience supports VR headsets for greater immersion.
Hyundai plans to start Ioniq 6 production in Korea in the third quarter of this year, followed by Europe later in the year. In the US, it is slated to go into production in January 2023, but the company has not confirmed whether the EV will be built at its forthcoming plant in Savannah, Georgia. Availability in the US will adjust according to supply and demand, but there are currently no nationwide release plans (the Ioniq 5 is currently sold in 38 states).

“By 2030, Hyundai will expand its all-electric lineup to 11 models to ensure global leadership in EVs,” said Hyundai CEO Jaehoon Chang with a glimpse of its XL-size Seven concept SUV, which will sit alongside the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq. 6 rides on a screen behind him. The video then showed a faster car zooming past, teasing an upcoming N performance EV without adding any extra detail. Hyundai takes EVs seriously enough to overtake other major automakers (except Tesla) in EV sales, according to this recent report. Bloomberg report — let’s hope the engineers aren’t forced to do all their work in an Ioniq 6 from now on.
