The leader of Instagram wants you to know that the company continues to lean on video. In a short video this morning it looks like it’s targeting No. 2 Instagram user Kylie Jenner, Instagram head Adam Mosseri bluntly explains that the app will continue to shift from its photo roots.

“I have to be honest. I do believe that more and more of Instagram will become video over time,” Mosseri said.

The app will continue to support photos, but Mosseri says its distance is driven by user behavior. Video sharing and viewing is growing and “we’re going to have to lean into that shift.”

Mosseri’s comments come a day after Jenner and her sister Kim Kardashian shared an image complaining about all the changes to the app. “Make Instagram Instagram again,” the post reads. “(Stop trying to be tiktok, I just want to see cute pictures of my friends). Best regards, everyone.” an associate online petition has over 100,000 signatures.

Instagram has been rapidly transforming in recent months as the company seeks to bolster its TikTok competitor, Reels, and allow users to spend more time in the app. The main feed is filled with algorithmic recommendations to match your friends’ posts, and almost all videos now lead you to Reels.

Instagram of course not to have to reshape itself around video, but its parent company – Facebook owner Meta – is looking for changes that will increase user base and retention. The main feed of the Facebook app will now be replaced with something similar to these Instagram changes, where it will combine more recommendations with your friends’ stuff.
