Apple can finally bring always-on display to the upcoming iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max. According to an report of Bloomberg‘s Mark GurmanApple could introduce the feature with iOS 16, allowing iPhone to display a limited amount of information even when locked.
Gurman says the iPhone version of the always-on mode could work the same way it did with the Apple Watch Series 5 and later: The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max will lower the lock screen frame rate with the always-on mode. mode enabled, saving them power while keeping the screen on. It’s unclear if the new iPhone will use the same low temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) display Apple uses in newer Watch models. These low-power displays play a big part in keeping the always-on mode working properly, as they’re built to prevent devices from consuming too much power.
Last year, analysts predicted that the iPhone 13 would ship with an LTPO display to enable always-on display. A number of Android devices already support the always-on mode – and have for many years. For example, on certain Samsung devices, the always-on display can show the time, battery level, widgets and more, while keeping the phone locked.
Gurman expects iOS 16 to have similar functionality, including wallpapers with “widget-like capabilities”. Always-on display isn’t the only feature that would be exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, as past leaks indicate Apple may include its new A16 chip only with the two premium devices.
Apple will announce a number of other changes on June 6 at the approaching Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). In line with previous predictions, Gurman believes Apple could introduce improved windowing and multitasking features to the iPad. he quotes developer Steve Troughton-Smith’s findings, which recently discovered that Apple may be working on a feature that allows users to freely resize windows. Apple could also overhaul some of its apps — in addition to adding new audio features to Messages, Gurman predicts that Apple will revamp its System Preferences menu to make it more like the Settings app on iOS.
Now that WWDC is out for a little over a week, we won’t have long to wait to see how many of these predictions come true.
