Liz Truss on Monday defeated British Foreign Secretary Rishi Sunak to become the third woman elected Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, after Boris Johnson, who served from 2019 to 2022. According to CNBC, about 81,326 members of the Conservative Party voted for Truss, while nearly 60,399 voted for Sunak. After the election, the latter took to Twitter to congratulate those who voted for him and rally party members in favor of Truss.
Meanwhile, Liz Truss took the stage to express her gratitude to the party workers and the chairman of the 1922 Committee, Sir Graham Brady, who announced the results:

She also expressed her gratitude to her opponent, Rishi Sunak, and outgoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson:

The newly elected prime minister also revealed some of the promises she plans to keep over the next two years:
“I will make an ambitious proposal to cut taxes while growing our economy.” I will tackle the energy problem by addressing people’s energy costs, as well as the long-term problems we have with the energy supply. And I will keep my promise to the National Health Service.”
