Maruti Suzuki to increase the carriage of cars by rail cars, to set up special sidings
The company transported more than 3.2 lakh vehicles using railcars last year, the highest number in a calendar year since 2013, when the company was awarded the Automobile Freight Train Operator (AFTO) license.
“In the future, we aim to further increase this number. To this end, we are setting up dedicated rail connections at our facilities in Haryana (Manesar) and Gujarat,”
“In line with the Government of India’s goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2070, we have stepped up our efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of our business operations. Our strategy to increase the use of rail transport in outbound logistics, has resulted in sending a record number of 3.2 lakh vehicles using railways in CY2022,” he said.
According to him, the use of rail cars instead of trucks has resulted in the compensation of about 1,800 tons of CO2 emissions.
“In addition, we were able to save more than 50 million liters of fuel during the year, which contributes to improving our country’s energy security,” noted Takeuchi.
The share of railways in carrying Maruti Suzuki’s cars is increasing and last calendar year it was 17.1 percent higher than 13.9 percent / 2.2 lakh units in 2021.
The AFTO license enables Maruti Suzuki to manufacture and operate high speed, high capacity railcar rakes on the Indian Railways network.
Maruti Suzuki uses 40 specially designed track rakes to transport vehicles across the country.
Each rake has a capacity to carry more than 300 vehicles.
Currently, the company operates loading terminals in Delhi-NCR and Gujarat and 18 destination terminals – Bangalore, Nagpur, Mumbai, Guwahati,
