Mindtree, a Larsen & Toubro Group, plans to set up a development center in Kolkatathat could create jobs for 15,000-20,000 people in the next four to five years, a company official said here on Wednesday.

The IT services company has already hired 1,700 people at its existing facility in the capital of West Bengal so far, he said.

“We have taken up 19 acres of space. Hopefully things will start. Construction will be done by L&T… management is committed. We will set up a huge center,” Mindtree Ltd Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Debashis Chatterjee said at ICT East organized by CII.

The development center can create jobs for 15,000-20,000 people, he said.

The IT company had announced the opening of its first development center in Kolkata in March.

Another IT company of the L&T group, Larsen and Toubro Infotech (LTI), also announced the opening of a new center in the eastern metropolis in June.

Larsen and Toubro’s board of directors had announced a composite plan in May to merge the two publicly traded IT services companies into a combined entity.

At the event, Minister of State Information Technology Babul Supriyo urged industry leaders to guide his department on “what needs to be done” to grow the information and technology sector in West Bengal.

Another multinational technology company, Oracle, is also considering the state’s opportunities for a data center project that could help small and medium-sized businesses.

We are working very closely with the government to create a dedicated data center for West Bengal, said: Shailendra Kumarasenior vice president, regional director India and NetSuite JAPAC, Oracle NetSuite Global Business Unit.

The plans could take shape in the next 2-3 months, he added.
