‘Minecraft’ studio wants nothing to do with NFTs

Don’t expect to buy one as one and it fits you server in the near future. Mojang has taken a strong stance against the hugely popular game’s involvement in NFTs and blockchain technology. “[To] ensure that Minecraft players have a safe and inclusive experience, blockchain technologies should not be integrated into our Minecraft client and server applications, nor may they be used to create NFTs associated with in-game content, including worlds, skins, persona items, or other mods,” the developer . It will soon update the game guidelines accordingly.

where people can sell their creations for others to use. Mojang notes that some companies have recently started offering NFTs connected to the game. There are some NFTs associated with: Minecraft skin packs and world files that people can buy. The studio said it would have been possible for players to earn Minecraft NFTs for activities completed in-game or elsewhere. Mojang is not involved in that.

“Each of these uses of NFTs and other blockchain technologies creates digital ownership based on scarcity and exclusion, which is not in line with Minecraft values of creative inclusion and play together,” it said. “NFTs do not encompass our entire community and create a scenario of the haves and the have-nots.”

While Minecraft server owners are allowed to charge for access, according to Mojang rules everyone should have access to the same functionality and content. “However, NFTs can create models of scarcity and exclusion that conflict with our guidelines and the spirit of Minecraftthe studio said.

Mojang also expressed concern about the speculative nature of NFTs, noting that some have been sold at “artificially or fraudulently overpriced”. Given that Minecraft has millions, it probably wouldn’t be good if the game supported NFTs. “The speculative pricing and investment mindset surrounding NFTs takes the focus away from playing the game and encourages profit-seeking, which we believe is inconsistent with our players’ long-term joy and success,” said Mojang.

The studio and parent company Microsoft have good reason to be wary of NFTs and blockchain technology. For starters, there’s a overwhelming recoil of the wider gaming community against those technologies. For another, cryptocurrency prices have plummeted and the NFT market has dried up. Even the former leader in the blockchain gaming space, axie infinity, was the target of a major hack (resulting in the victims losing it) and daily player counts plummeted by more than two thirds in the past months.

Some other major players in the gaming industry have already moved away from NFTs and the blockchain. Last October, Steam games that enable cryptocurrency and NFT trading came out. Sony has recently added digital collectibles. However, it stressed that these could not be traded and that the program does not include NFTs or the blockchain.

However, Mojang does not completely reject the blockchain. The studio said it will monitor the evolution of the technology to “determine whether it enables safer experiences or other practical and inclusive uses in gaming.”
