Netflix makes mobile game and TV series ‘Exploding Kittens’

If Exploding Kittens still part of your party game repertoire several years later, Netflix has exactly the news you were hoping to hear. The streaming service is to introduce an “exclusive” version of the Exploding Kittens mobile game and an animated TV series. Produced by card game makers Elan Lee and Matthew “The Oatmeal” Inman, as well as veterans such as Mike Judge, the adult-oriented show will star well-known personalities including Lucy Liu (Kill Bill) and Tom Ellis (Match†

The series revolves around a holy war in which God and the devil visit Earth in the form of meaty domestic cats. It won’t stream on Netflix until 2023, but the upgraded game will be out in May with two new maps and promises of future gameplay based on the show.

Netflix would like to note that this is the first time it has launched both a game and series from the same franchise (Weird stuff apparently doesn’t count). While the game certainly wasn’t built from scratch, the company didn’t hint so subtly that it might repeat this concurrent development strategy in the future — don’t be surprised if more games and shows arrive at once.
