Brynn, who had a history of alcohol and substance abuse, shot Phil in the head, chest and throat after an argument, leaving him dead at the site. Philip Edward Hartman was born on September 24, 1948 in Brantford, Ontario Canada, to Rupert Loebig Hartman and his wife Doris Marguerite. The fourth of eight children, he was raised Catholic and when he turned 10, the family moved to the US. They first found a home in Lewiston, Maine, then Meriden, Connecticut, but eventually moved to the West Coast.

He attended Westchester High School, where he found a deep connection to comedy, acting like a class clown along the way. After graduating, he enrolled at Santa Monica City College, but dropped out and became a roadie for a rock band. Still, three years later, he enrolled at California State University, Northridge, to study graphic arts. In time, he started his own graphics company and in the 1970s, he created over 40 album covers for various bands, including America and Poco, among others. He also designed the logo for Crosby, Stills & Nash.
Career
His show business career began in the mid-1970s when he joined the improv comedy group The Groundlings. As time went on, he became more encouraged to perform with the group on stage, eventually making his acting debut in the movie “Stunt Rock” in 1978. In 1986, he met his future third wife, Bryn Omdahl (Vicki Jo Omdahl), on a blind date; the two became a couple and married in November 1987.
