Sega has revealed more about its mysterious “Super Game” project, and it’s more complex than you might have expected. if VGC and Kotaku note, Sega executive VP Shuji Utsumi used a interview on its Japanese recruiting page to explain that Super Game is actually “different titles” in progress within the same framework. He and fellow leaders were shy about many details, but promised that these would be blockbusters that ventured “beyond” the conventional gaming experience.
That could include some more trendy technology. Producer Masayoshi Kikuchi said in the interview that it was “natural” to expand into areas like “cloud gaming and NFT”. This was not a clear commitment to use both technologies and comes shortly after Sega recognized a public response to NFTs. However, Sega recently registered a “Sega NFT” trademark in Japan – at least it’s open to the idea of offering digital collectibles.
Sega last year unveiled a partnership with Microsoft to leverage the Azure cloud platform for the development of Super Game. However, this doesn’t necessarily indicate any game streaming plans. For example, Sony used Azure to help build its online infrastructure.
Super Game may not come out for a while. Parent company Sega Sammy said in November 2021 it could invest the equivalent of $882 million in the project over the next five years. You don’t necessarily have to wait that long for the first products, but it is clear that Sega sees Super Game more as a strategic gamble than a short-term solution.
