You don’t have to wait long to earn bonuses for playing and buying PlayStation games. Sony says now the PlayStation Stars loyalty program will debut in America on October 5, while Australians and Europeans will have access on October 13. Stars is already active in Asia, including Japan. The program is free, although you do get some benefits if you are a PlayStation Plus member.
You can currently access Stars via the PlayStation app on mobile if you want the “full” experience. However, you can sign up on the web and Sony expects to reach PlayStation consoles in the future.
As explained earlier, you earn rewards in PlayStation Stars by completing activities and campaigns, ranging from the very simple (playing a game once a month) to the challenging (being among the first to score a game’s platinum trophy in your region ). You earn loyalty points that can be used towards your PlayStation Network wallet, digital collectibles (no, not NFTs) and certain products. You can also receive collectibles directly.
You can improve the number of rewards you get by progressing through trophies and purchase-based status levels. However, you must top that up 13 months after the end of the calendar year you reached them. If you reach level 2 in October, you have until January 31, 2024 to do something to extend that status.
The strategy and drivers are not new. As with Microsoft Points and Nintendo Gold Points, this gives you an incentive to keep coming back to your console – and spending money. However, since it’s free, it might be worth a try, even if you only occasionally boot your PS5.
