Actress Nichelle Nichols, best known for her role as Nyota Uhura in Star Trek: The Original Series, has passed away. Nichols’ son Kyle Johnson shared the news Sunday. “I am sorry to inform you that there is no longer a great light for us in the firmament as it has for so many years,” he said. . “Her life was a life well lived and as such a model for all of us.” Nichols was 89 when she died of natural causes on Saturday, July 30.

To say Nichols was a pioneer would be an understatement. She broke through in Hollywood at a time when opportunities for black women were scarce. In interviews years later The original series ended, Nichols said she’d considered quitting the show during its first season to pursue a Broadway career, but changed her mind after seeing Martin Luther King Jr. King, as a fan of the show and someone who saw Nichols as a role model, was apparently shocked to find out she wanted to leave and convinced her to stay with it.

More than in the lead role The original series and its movie sequels, as well as making memorable appearances in shows like heroes and futurama, Nichols worked with NASA for decades to help the space agency diversify its talent pool. She was also famous at the 1976 christening of the Space Shuttle Enterprise, along with Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry and much of the cast of The original series. In 2015, she also flew aboard NASA’s on an eight-hour flight during which the observatory studied Mars and Saturn. She will be missed.
