If you’re craving an official Star Trek NFT, now’s your chance. Paramount and Recur are: launch the first batch of Star Trek NFTs through paramount.xyz in a 24-hour sale beginning April 9 at 11:00 a.m. Eastern. However, despite the franchise’s futuristic vision, the experience will be familiar to buyers of blockchain art. Spend $250 on a Season 0 pack and you’ll get unique, algorithmically built starships (see an example above) that you can show off and sell to other Trekkies. There will be 20,000 items in this first wave, with 2,000 more “in reserve”.
There will be incentives to buy early. Starship owners receive NFTs from crew members before they are more widely released in Season 1, and in Season 2 you can use that crew for missions in-game to earn.
The Star Trek offering is part of a larger strategy by Paramount to offer NFTs in its “key franchises.” Don’t be surprised if you see a CSI or Indiana Jones drop, then. The only question is whether they will be successful. The NFT market is still young and the industry often faces scams, spam and other problems. It’s not yet clear whether there’s sustained demand for (and confidence in) digital rarities, even if they’re tied to a well-known sci-fi series.
