Hyper Light Drifter‘s retro style and relentless action have spawned a spiritual successor and even an animated series, but what about a sequel? Don’t worry, it’s coming. Eurogamer notes Heart Machine has revealed Hyper Light Breaker, a game set in the Hyper Light universe but with very different mechanics. Gone is the Zelda-like 2D rendering and solo-only gameplay – instead, make your way through waves of enemies in a full 3D environment with optional co-op games.
The title is also not a sequel. Instead, you’ll fight through a new land (the “Overgrowth”) trying to overthrow the Abyss King and grapple with mysterious crowns. You’ll gain access to tools that take advantage of the extra dimension, including a glider, hoverboard, and wall dashes. While the fast tempo and some “threads” of tramp will transfer, breaker is its own game.
Hyper Light Breaker expected to be launched on Steam in the spring of 2023. That would be disappointing if you hoped for a straightforward continuation of the tramp experience. At the same time, you don’t often see game developers move from nostalgic 2D to a significantly different 3D experience – it could be refreshing if you want more than just a revamped version.
