He was a restless child and dropped out of high school when he was 16 years old. At that time he started playing the guitar and as he got older he started playing with music groups.

Career

With the beginning of the 1960s, his musical career developed and he was part of the soul group The Shades. With them he worked on several albums and with bandmate Bobby Taylor he founded the nightclub Blue Balls. Unfortunately, at one point he was fired by the group’s manager for being late for a performance. After the split from Cheech and Chong, Tommy continued his career but did not have much success, other than the role of Leo in the TV series “That 70’s Show” (1999-2006), and most recently as Ezra in the sci-fi horror film “Color Out of Space” (2019), starring Nicolas Cage, Joely Richardson and Madeleine Arthur.

Legal issues

Tommy has faced legal difficulties several times in his life, due to his use of marijuana, including his participation in Operation Pipe Dreams. Fortunately, he made it through the process, having struck a deal with the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania’s Office, eventually serving his nine-month sentence at the Taft Correctional Institution.

His cellmate was Jordan Belfort, known as the original Wolf of Wall Street. Tommy was the one who inspired and encouraged Jordan to write his memoir, and they are still good friends.

Personal life and net worth

Before meeting Shelby, Tommy had one failed marriage behind him; in 1960, he married Maxine Sneed, who is of Black Canadian and Cherokee descent. The two were married until 1970 and have two daughters, Rae Dawn and Robbi Chong.

He has remained true to his support for marijuana and is now a regular contributor to Cannabis Culture Magazine, while also serving on the advisory board of NORML (National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws).

In 2012, Tommy received his first cancer diagnosis, prostate cancer, but after using hemp oil, he declared that he was cured. However, in 2015, he was diagnosed with colon cancer, but he also managed to beat that terrible disease. He too talked about his dance lessons which affected his whole condition.
