Droupadi Murmu is a member of the BJP and served as governor of Jharkhand from 2015 to 2021. She was also the first woman to lead the state as governor.

The Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) parliamentary council on Tuesday selected Droupadi Murmu, a tribal BJP leader and former governor of Jharkhand, as the candidate for India’s next president. The last day to run for president is June 29. Elections will be held on July 18 and votes will be counted on July 21.

Who is Droupadi Murmu?

The first time Droupadi Murmu received much attention was in 2017, when the BJP was said to be considering her for that year’s presidential election. She was in charge of Jharkhand state at the time.

Murmu was born on June 20, 1958 in Baidaposi village of Mayurbhanj district. She is a member of the Santhal community, one of the oldest and largest tribal groups in India.

She went to school at Ramadevi Women’s College in Bhubaneswar, the state capital. Her father was the head of the village council. She first worked for the government of Odisha as a clerk. From 1979 to 1983 she was a junior assistant in the irrigation and energy department.

History of Public Service

From 1994 to 1997 she also worked as a teacher at the Sri Aurobindo Integral Education and Research Center in Rairangpur. In 1997, she was elected as a councilor in Rairangpur, a town near where she grew up. This was the beginning of her political career.

A BJP member, she was twice elected to the state assembly from the Rairangpur seat, in 2000 and 2009. She was a minister in the state’s coalition government, led by Naveen Patnaik of the Biju Janata Dal party from 2000. until 2004. Initially she was responsible for trade and transport. Later she was put in charge of fisheries and animal resources.

From 2006 to 2009, Murmu chaired the BJP’s ‘planned tribes’ state wing. These are tribal communities that are socially and economically disadvantaged according to the Indian Constitution. After becoming the first female governor of nearby Jharkhand state in 2015, she retired from politics.

She was also the first tribal leader from Odisha to take charge of a state. She did this work for six years, from July 2016 to July 2021.

Easy start

She started her career as a teacher at the Shri Aurobindo Integral Education Center in Raigarh. She taught students for free because she gave so much to help people who didn’t have much.

Ministries that Murmu handled

She has been in charge of many ministries such as transport and trade, fisheries and animal husbandry. The Legislative Assembly of Odisha gave Murmu the “Nilakantha Award” for being the best MLA of 2007.

Opposition candidate

Earlier on Tuesday, opposition parties said Yashwant Sinha, a former Union minister, would be their choice as president.

“We (opposition parties) all agreed that Yashwant Sinha will be our common candidate for the presidency,” Congress leader Jairam Ramesh told media immediately after the opposition party meeting in the Parliament annex.

Here is some things you need until know about the BJPs presidential candidate:

  • If elected, Murmu would be the first president of a tribe and the second president of India as a woman.

  • She has been an MLA of Rairangpur in Mayurbhanj twice, both times on the BJP ticket (2000 and 2009).

  • Five years ago, when President Pranab Mukherjee was about to leave Rashtrapati Bhavan, Murmu was first seen as a potential candidate.

  • She was in charge of Trade and Transport and then Fisheries and Livestock when the BJP-BJD coalition government came to power in 2000.

  • She managed to win in 2009, although the BJD was much stronger than the BJP at the time.

  • Murmu has had a lot of bad luck in her personal life. She lost her husband, Shyam Charan Murmu, and two of her sons.

  • Before becoming an MLA, Murmu was a councilor in the Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat and vice president of BJP’s Scheduled Tribes Morcha. She was elected in 1997.

  • The BJP’s pursuit of tribalism will be greatly boosted by the fact that the NDA is expected to win 48 percent of the vote.
