Henry Carlos Cejudo was born in Los Angeles, California on February 9, 1987. Nelly Rico and Jorge Cejudo are his parents. His family was constantly on the move due to his father’s alcohol and drug abuse. After his father was imprisoned, his mother moved to New Mexico. His brother inspired him.

He started practicing at a young age. Cejudo never had his own bed all his childhood. An amateur boxer, he won the annual state Copper Gloves boxing tournament in 2010. He attended Grand Canyon University after high school and earned a degree in theology.

Henry Cejudo began his career as an undefeated four-time AIA state champion. He won during his freshman year in Arizona. As a junior and senior, he also won the Colorado State Championships. He was named ASICS National High School Wrestler of the Year in 2006. He also won the Fargo National in high school. He then began training at the US Olympic Training Center.
