Leslie Alexander was born in New York City in 1943 to a Jewish family. In 1965, he received his bachelor’s degree in economics from New York University and his Juris Doctorate from the San Diego branch of Western State University College of Law, now known as Thomas Jefferson School of Law.

Career
Leslie Alexander started his professional career as a lawyer. From 1978 to 2009 he was a member of the California State Bar. His first job was trading options and bonds for the Wall Street firm Lawrence Kotkin Associates. He left in 1980 to found his investment company, The Alexander Group. He also owns 18.5% of First Marblehead, a private student loan company.
In July 1993, just before the start of the NBA season, Alexander paid $85 million to the Houston Rockets. The Rockets won the NBA title the following two seasons, in 1993-94 and 1994-95. Forbes magazine named him the NBA’s top owner in 2008.
In 1998, Alexander attempted to buy the Edmonton Oilers franchise and move it to the National Hockey League, but a grassroots campaign led by local entrepreneurs blocked the takeover.
From 1997 to early 2007, Alexander owned the WNBA’s Houston Comets. The Comets won the first four WNBA championships from 1997 to 2000. A year before the Comets split, he sold the franchise to Hilton Koch in January 2007.
Leslie Alexander has teamed up with Chinese billionaire Kenneth Huang (founder of Sportscorp in China), who invests in several Asian companies. In 2006, Leslie Alexander sold a minority stake in the Rockets to a group of investors led by Kenneth Huang.
On July 17, 2017, the Rockets announced that they were for sale. On September 5, 2017, he agreed to sell the Rockets to Texas businessman TilTilman Fertittar, a worldwide professional sports record of $2.2 billion, subject to league approval.
Before leaving, Alexander agreed to a new contract with Rockets general manager Daryl Morey and extended James Harden’s contract for a record $228 million, a four-year deal that would run until the end of the NBA. -season 2022-23.
He also kept the two Larry O’Brien Championship Trophies from 1993-1994 and 1994-1995 as mementos of his ownership, and the team ordered the replacement of duplicate trophies once the trophy was sold.
He owns a vineyard on Long Island and founded the Leslie Wine company in 2008. He also has a home in Houston. In March 2019, he listed a $3.7 million French mansion-style home in Houston.
