early life
There is no information about Aaron Kaufman’s childhood and family, although it is a known fact that he became fascinated with cars from an early age due to his father’s influence.
But even before his love for car-related things started, Kaufman was interested in taking things apart — like toys and small artifacts — to put them back together. This fascination with mechanics that started as a hobby eventually led him to find his passion in car building, modification and racing events.
While attending Crowley High, Kaufman bought his first car, a Jeep Cherokee Chief, and began improving it with tweaks and new things. During this time he met his classmate Scot McMillan Jr., who helped him install an extended pickup cab and air suspension on the car.
This also marked Kaufman’s entry into motorsport, as he and McMillan Jr. visited many exhibitions to race their creation, even as far as California to show their skills.
After their matriculation, McMillan Jr. and Kaufman attended the University of Texas at Arlington, but they soon decided college wasn’t for them and dropped out because McMillan Jr. remembered in an interview: ‘It’s not that we couldn’t do university.
We both have straight A’s. After we realized that we were going to get into debt and we already knew more than the average person, we started our own business.’
Unable to get a loan to set up their shop due to their young age, they eventually realized that doing business together was not possible at the time. So their dream had to be postponed for a few years.
Right after leaving college, McMillan Jr. enlisted in the United States Marines, and Kaufman pursued a career as a mechanic and landed his first job.

mechanic
After parting ways with his friend McMillan Jr., Kaufman began working as a mechanic for Richard Rawlings at his auto repair and modification company Gas Monkey Garage.

In the years he worked with Rawlings, Kaufman improved his knowledge of automotive mechanics, as he could not only use better tools and resources, but also be more creative in his modifications. In addition, working with Rawlings – 13 years his senior – allowed Kaufman to enhance his racing experience.

Fast N’ Loud
Unbeknownst to Kaufman, Rawlings had previously contacted several producers to persuade them to create a TV series based on the Gas Monkey Garage. His efforts were largely ignored until the idea reached Discovery Channel, which was looking for a show based on car modifications.

The way the company operated was different because it had to fit into the “Fast N’ Loud” TV format. On the bright side, Kaufman’s old friend McMillan Jr. at one point in the series with him.
A network producer named Craig Coffman was in charge of the show: “We didn’t have car shows on the air and nobody trusted them. They thought it was going to be a bomb. It turned out to be some kind of comedy. Richard and Aaron were a great duo, and it worked. The show immediately got ratings and that led to a lot of other car shows.”
The show, which premiered in 2012, focuses primarily on buying cars to rebuild and put them up for sale. The series is clearly aimed primarily at men, a fact proven by The New York Times in 2016, after the magazine surveyed the most-watched programs in the US and audience preferences, “It’s by far the most liked show by men on our list — 83 percent of the ‘likes’ came from men.” .
