We’ll admit, when Top Gun: Maverick was announced, we didn’t have high expectations. While Top Gun was an 80s classic, it never really got critical acclaim and was more of a teenage rebellion story than a wartime adventure. Sure, the planes made it look impressive (even Luis Miguel wanted something similar), but we didn’t expect a sequel to be so impressive or so awesome that we’d completely forget about the past, leaving us wanting to see more. It could be one of the best sequels in history, and it will undoubtedly be one of the most successful movies of the year.
Top Gun: Maverick follows Tom Cruise and reinterprets his character Maverick, one of the best pilots in the world, who still fully retains his rebellious spirit and who basically avoided any kind of promotion to continue flying planes. One day, the man is called in to train a group of Top Guns for a special mission under Admiral Tom “Iceman” Kazansky (who was played by Val Kilmer in the first film). Among his new students is Lieutenant Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, played by Miles Teller, the son of “Goose”, Rooster’s friend. Maverick who dies in the first movie.
Director: Joseph Kosinskic
Release date (theaters): May 27, 2022
As we said, the work far exceeds the original, and we’ll tell you five reasons to check it out:
Top Gun: Maverick does not depend on the past
While many sequels build on the first installment, Top Gun: Maverick works as a standalone movie and you don’t need to have seen Top Gun to understand it. The story doesn’t need too much of the past to work. The whole backstory of Maverick is explained in the first part, but the rest is a brand new story. Sure, fans will be in for a few surprises with references to the past, but the rest will take us to this point in Maverick’s life with a new love interest and his own conflict to overcome.
This isn’t to say it doesn’t match the original – there are even some very emotional moments that bring back memories of the past, but it comes across with enough to appeal to anyone.
Due to factors of the time, the original Top Gun doesn’t look that impressive at the moment, but thanks to current technologies, this sequel manages to reach really masterful levels with action scenes in the planes that really get you in the suspense of what’s happening. Likewise, Oscar winner Claudio Miranda’s photography really gives each shot a significant weight, bringing not only a huge Hollywood success, but a stunning success. The recommendation here is to watch it on the biggest screen you can.
