The HBO show “Legendary” is a revolutionary show in itself. According to IndieWire, the show introduces viewers to the LGBTQ ball scene that was popular in the 1980s and 1990s in New York City and other cities, including Los Angeles.
When series like “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” bring LGBTQ superstars to the fore, “Legendary” takes viewers back to the origins that inspired these pop culture pillars.
If you’ve ever watched the FX series “Pose” or just listened to Madonna’s album “Vogue”, you’re probably familiar with the New York City ballroom scene. Being a competition show, the contestants in “Legendary” incorporate elements of ball culture, such as vogueing, with a touch of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” for good measure.
The movie “Legendary” received overwhelmingly positive reviews (via The Hollywood Reporter). In its capacity to showcase queer and black musicians while also showing respect for LGBTQ culture, the event is considered innovative. This news that HBO has opted to extend the show for a third season comes as no surprise to anyone.
