By India Today Web Desk: Amou Haji, popularly known as the world’s dirtiest man, died at the age of 94, a few months after his first wash. The Iranian national has not showered in over half a century, believing that staying dirty kept him alive for so long.

Haji lived in an open stone hut and had faced some “emotional setbacks” in his youth that left him feeling isolated. He died on Sunday in the village of Dejgah. Here is his life in five points.

  • Haji, covered in soot, lived in a small hut that often resembled a grave in the Iranian desert, close to the village of Dejgah. Haji experienced “emotional setbacks in his youth” and he decided to stay away from soap and water for over 60 years.

  • According to the Tehran Times, Haji would eat porcupine meat, smoke cigarettes and pipes filled with animal feces, believing that cleanliness would make him sick. He smoked several cigarettes at once, all donated by villagers.
