YouTube wants everyone to know whether you just post your shorts on TikTok or Instagram reels. In an update to the Community Help Center, a YouTube team member said: announced that the website has started adding watermarks to Shorts downloaded from the Studio creator portal. YouTube will begin watermarking Shorts you create on desktop in the coming weeks, before expanding to mobile in the coming months.
After TikTok exploded in popularity, other internet companies realized that short videos had won over the younger generation and quickly developed new products to rival the platform. However, if you spend time wasting videos on different apps and websites, it’s easy to see that creators often repost the same videos on multiple services – many Instagram roles, for example, are also TikTok videos.
Google’s website said it watermarks Shorts so that “viewers can see the content” [the user is] cross-platform sharing can be found on YouTube Shorts.” It sounds like it hopes the new feature can raise awareness that it also hosts short videos, and get you to try it and use it over its competitors.
YouTube first launched its short video format in India in 2020 before being released in 100 countries last year. A few months later, it set aside $100 million to start paying the makers of Shorts. In June of this year, YouTube said that Shorts already has 1.5 billion active, monthly logged-in users, which is far more than the 1 billion monthly active users that TikTok reported in September 2021.
