You can now play one of the internet’s most famous memes right on your Nintendo Switch. Zero WingFeaturing the classic “all your base is ours” line during the introductory cutscene, is now available to play in the Sega Genesis app accessible with a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription.
Nintendo seems to be well aware of the meme. In a video announcement the arrival of Zero Wing and three other games for the service, Nintendo leads the way with the space shooter and includes many memorable quotes from the poor translation, including, of course, the “all your base” line. (Warning that the Zero Wing section in the video and the game itself has snatches of intensely flickering lights, in case you’re sensitive to those like me.)
Now that I’m in my 30s I’m basically a dinosaur in internet years so I have no idea if “all your base is ours” is somehow still relevant or just something us old-timers can point out when you reminisce about times gone by. If you are not familiar with the meme or if you are like me and want to feel nostalgic, Ars Technica wrote a beautiful piece about it last year, although that article reminded me that the meme is now over 20 years old. Oof.
